Last year's budget phone vs the current model in Canada: when the older phone stops being cheaper
$0. That is the saving on the most common version of this purchase in Canada right now. Canada Computers lists the Samsung Galaxy A16 5G, the previous generation, at $269.99. Samsung launched its replacement, the Galaxy A17 5G, in Canada at an MSRP of $269.99. The usual advice to buy last year's model and pocket the difference assumes a difference exists. On this shelf, at these prices, it does not, and the older phone still charges a cost the sticker hides.

Two prices, checked, with the same number on them
Prices below are the retrieved Canadian figures in the research packet for this guide. Dates matter here, because an older model's price only means something next to the date it was seen.
| Phone and source | Price | Checked | Condition of the offer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Galaxy A16 5G, 128GB, Canadian model SM-A166WZKAXAC, Canada Computers | $269.99 CAD | November 4, 2026 | New listing, but shown as sold out when checked |
| Galaxy A17 5G, Samsung Canada launch MSRP, reported January 20, 2026 | $269.99 CAD | Checked November 4, 2026 | Launch price through Samsung's online store and select carrier and retail partners |
| Galaxy A17 5G on a Freedom Mobile tab, Best Buy Canada | $380.00 CAD full retail price | November 4, 2026 | The carrier's full retail figure behind a $10.00 per month tab price, before tax, on an eligible plan |
| Galaxy A16 5G, private marketplace listing on Karrot in Canada | $200.00 CAD | November 4, 2026 | Used, one private seller, described as SIM unlocked with a clean IMEI. Not a new phone price |
Read the first two rows together and the standard advice falls apart. A generation drop that saves nothing is not a deal, it is a choice to accept an older phone at a new phone price. The fourth row shows where a lower A16 price actually lives in Canada at the moment: the used market, with a used phone's risks attached.
Price the support year the older phone has already spent
Both phones carry six generation update commitments, which is exactly why the calendar matters. Samsung lists the Galaxy A17 5G with six generations of OS upgrades and six years of security updates, with the security period valid until August 31, 2031. The Galaxy A16 5G also receives six OS upgrades, counted from the Android 14 it shipped with, and six years of security updates, a run that ends on October 31, 2030. Same promise, different amount left on the clock.
The worked example below uses only the two prices and the two end dates above. The month counts are rounded approximations from November 2026, and they are labelled as such so the math can be redone with a different purchase date.
| Phone | Price used | Security support remaining from November 2026 | Cost per month of remaining support |
|---|---|---|---|
| Galaxy A16 5G | $269.99 | About 48 months, to October 31, 2030 | $269.99 divided by 48, about $5.62 per month |
| Galaxy A17 5G | $269.99 | About 58 months, to August 31, 2031 | $269.99 divided by 58, about $4.65 per month |
At equal sticker prices, the newer phone delivers its support at about $0.97 less per month. Turn that around and it gives the older phone a fair price ceiling. For the A16 5G to match the A17 5G's cost per support month, it would need to sell at about $4.65 times 48, which is roughly $223. At $269.99 it is priced about $47 above that ceiling. A discount smaller than that gap is a discount in name only.
One honest limit on this math: support months only pay out if the phone is kept. A buyer who replaces a phone every two years never collects the later support years from either model, and for that buyer the support column should carry far less weight than the camera and condition differences in the next section.
What the newer phone adds for the same money
The hardware gap between these two generations is small, and saying so plainly helps the older model where it deserves help. Android Central's comparison puts both phones on the same Exynos 1330 chip, with 128GB of storage, 5,000mAh batteries, IP54 ratings, and a 6.7 inch Super AMOLED display at 90Hz and 2340 x 1080 in both cases. Nobody is buying a different class of phone by choosing the newer box.
The differences that do exist point one way. The A17 5G's 50MP main camera adds optical image stabilization, which the A16 5G's 50MP main camera does not have. The remaining cameras match: a 5MP ultrawide, a 2MP macro, and a 13MP front camera on both. The A17 5G also adds Corning Gorilla Glass Victus over the display, and it is slimmer and lighter, at 7.5mm and 192 grams against 7.9mm and 200 grams. At the same $269.99, those are free upgrades. At a real discount on the older phone, they become the price of the saving, and a buyer who rarely shoots photos indoors may happily pay it.
The traps around the edges of this purchase
The sold out saving. The Canada Computers A16 5G listing that anchors the older model's price showed the phone as sold out when checked on November 4, 2026. A price that cannot be paid saves nobody anything. Last generation stock thinning out is part of the pattern: the window where the older phone is both cheaper and actually available can be short, and a listing page is not evidence that it is still open.
The used price wearing new clothing. The $200 A16 5G figure in the table is a private used listing. Comparing a used price against a new MSRP manufactures a $69.99 saving that was never on offer for a new phone, and it quietly swaps a manufacturer's warranty for a stranger's description. Used can still be the right buy. It just has to be compared against other used phones, not against a launch price.
The carrier figure. Best Buy Canada's Freedom Mobile listing for the A17 5G shows a Freedom full retail price of $380.00, with the phone presented at $10.00 per month after a bill credit over 24 months, taxes extra, on an eligible plan. That full retail figure sits $110.01 above the phone's $269.99 Canadian launch MSRP. A household comparing monthly tab prices across carriers can end up anchored to the $380 figure and overpay for the same handset that another channel sells at MSRP. The generation question matters less than the channel question at that point.
The model number swap. The Canadian A16 5G in the Canada Computers listing is model SM-A166WZKAXAC, and the Canadian A17 5G is SM-A176WZKAXAC. Listings that omit the model number, or show a different regional variant at a tempting price, are not the same offer. Check the model number on the box or listing against the Canadian variant before treating any price as comparable.
The decision, with the ceiling attached
Buy the current model when both phones sit at or near $269.99, which is the situation the checked prices describe. Same money, one more support year, a stabilized main camera, and tougher display glass is not a close call. Buy last year's model when a new, in stock A16 5G, Canadian model number confirmed, drops to roughly $223 or less, the point where its cost per month of remaining support matches the newer phone. Between $223 and $269.99 the older phone can still suit a buyer who replaces phones quickly and does not shoot many indoor photos, but the saving should be described honestly as small.
Skip both listings when the older phone is sold out at the quoted price, when the low price turns out to be a used unit, or when the only route to the newer phone runs through a $380 carrier full retail figure. Wait for a stocked, comparable offer instead.
The rule travels beyond these two Samsung models. Last year's phone is a saving only when three things line up at once: a lower price than the current model, stock that can actually be bought, and a discount large enough to pay for the support time already spent. Check all three, in that order, before the older box gets credit for being the thrifty choice.
Our take: At $269.99 against $269.99, the Galaxy A16 5G is not the budget option, it is the same budget spent on less phone. It earns that label again near $223 new and in stock. Until then, the current model is the saving.
